Tip: Your AppleTV streaming issues might be caused by Smart Connect feature of the Netgear R7000 router

Posted on April 16, 2017April 16, 2017 by Jon Stacey

Have buffer or stream interrupts with video on your AppleTV but your Internet connections seems to be working just fine? The cause might be the Smart Connect feature of your Netgear router. This feature switches devices between 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands automatically for you.

This feature is great in theory, but less so for applications that depend on a reliable connection, such as streaming video. Brief disruptions to your network connection is more likely to be noticed. Perhaps the AppleTV isn’t great about changing radio frequencies quickly, or maybe the R7000 doesn’t handle session transfer smoothly.

Regardless of who is to blame, turning off Smart Connect resolves the issue. Perhaps this is an issue you’re having as well if you were led here by a keyword search on your favorite search engine. The fix is to disable the Smart Connect feature and force your Connect to either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band rather than use the auto switch feature of your router.

Been dealing with streaming apps like Channels that would just stop about 3 seconds into the stream. Disable smart connect and I’m back to normal.
